Pa. school drops required fitness class for obese

December 6, 2009 1 comment

This article talks about how students with a BMI of 30 or above had to take a health fitness class to graduate. The historically black college eliminated the program because students were complaining that it is not fair for them to take the program and not everyone in the college. I think it is unethical to make large college students take this course and not everyone in the college. It is commendable to try and help these obese students but I feel that you should make everyone take the course to graduate.

Reid says yes to Abstinence

December 6, 2009 Leave a comment

This article talks about how Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wants to bring back abstinence only programs. These programs inform teens that abstinence is the only way teens can prevent pregency and STD’s. Research has shown that these programs do not stop teens from having sex. I feel that these programs are a waste of money. Teens are smart enough to the risks of having sex and they choose to ingore those risks. Teens are under a lot of pressure when it comes to sex and these programs cannot outweigh those pressures.

Drug courts successful for few who get it

December 6, 2009 Leave a comment

This article talks about a defense lawyer who become addicted to meth. She was charged with twenty four bulgeries and cooking meth in her apartment. Her lawyer was able to convince the court to give her treatment at a drug facility instead of jail time. This was a success she is clean and caring for her two year old daughter. I feel that more people should receive chances like she did because drug addiction can make a person do crazy things and instead of making them spend years in jail with no help we should send them to receive help and try to turn that persons life around.

“Sexting” is more common than you might think

December 6, 2009 Leave a comment

This article talks about how young teens are sending naked picturers through their cell phones. Some teens who are only sixteen are being charged with felony charges for sending nude pictures. Many teens know that it is a serious crime and just do not care. It goes behind that idea that teens do not think it will happen to them. Its just like downloading music without paying for it. Teens do not think they can get in trouble for stealing music. I feel that this falls on the parents as many problems with teens do. They should take a more active role in making sure their children are not committing felonies.

Study: Slowdown in warming last year not permanent

December 6, 2009 Leave a comment

This article talks about scientists explaining that the cooler temperture is not because of global warming. North America wasn’t as warm as expected because of cooler water in the North Pacific. President Obama is meeting in Denmark to speak to the United Nations about global warming. I hope that since scientists are saying that the cooler temperturers have nothing to do with global warming will make the U.S goverement not as concerned with global warming as they should be. It is imporant for our goverment to make sure Americans take care of our enviroment because global warming could be a problem later on.

Gates:2-4 years of big Afghan role for U.S troops

December 6, 2009 Leave a comment

This article talks about the Defense Secretary Robert Gates stating that U.S troops will stay in Afghanistan for another 2 to 4 years. They want to increase the number of troops to 30,000. They want to make sure the Tabilan does not grow back to power. I feel that this is a good idea because most of Al Qaide and Tabilan who is the biggest threat to the U.S are in Afghanistan. Knowing that we can possibly keep terrorism down is comforting. I always felt that we needed more troops in Afganistan than Iraq because that is where the true threat is.

Promises,Promises,a closed meeting on openess

December 6, 2009 Leave a comment

This article is about Obama’s adminstration promising during his campaign that his adminstration will be transparent to the public. His promises are not exactly coming through because of the Freedom of Information Act. He did post online the spending of the stimulus money, however they refuse to release pictures of U.S troops abusing inmates. I feel that if Obama is going to promise to be transparent than he should not pick the good news and not show the bad news. I know it is bad for the U.S goverment to see American troops beating inmates, but you promised to be more transparent. Its just another example of a president promising something in his campaign and not coming through all the way.
