Rise of charities in the U.S.

There has been a 60 percent increase in charitable organization in the past 10 years. According to a study done by Stanford University, the Internal Revenue Service approved over 99 percent of applications for new organizations that wanted to become a publice charity. The $300 billion donated to charitable organizations cost the federal government over $50 billion in lost revenue. With this dramatic increase in new organizations, it is hard to keep track if everyone is doing abiding by the law and doing what is required. The IRS says they have built scrutiny into their approval process tho.

Charitable organizations are a good thing that help out our community but the IRS may need to have a more difficult process to be able to claim an organization as a public charity. The loss of $50 billion is not a small amount especially during these hard economic times. With the great increase in these organizations it is also hard to monitor if each organization is doing what they are supposed to do and not just abusing the system. I believe the IRS should make a committee that’s sole job is to monitor all of these organizations and make sure everything is lined up.
