Are your holiday lights a fire hazard?

Counterfeit electronics pose a safety threat, especially around the holidays.

Not only are counterfeit electronics illegal, they are also very dangerous. “These things can kill you,” says Brett Brenner, president of the Electrical Safety Foundation, an industry-funded organization based in Roslyn, Va. “A counterfeit purse or a CD isn’t going to hurt you. But a counterfeit electrical product will hurt you.”

The danger with these products isnt visible to the plain eye, these products arent tested for safety regulations which can be very dangerous for consumers. Some products include batteries, hair dryers, and cell phone chargers. US customs agents are doing their best to check what comes over the border before they hit the market. Counterfeit electronics often have fake safety seals to make them look legitimate. This raises quite a dilemma. Should we put more enforcement on the borders and what comes into our country? How do we do so? With the regulations we have as it is, there are still counterfeit products all around. Comments?

This is an ethical issue. People are buying these items and there is a possibility that they can be hurt. The U.S. should try to do something about this so that citizens will not continue to be hurt.

When I read this title all I could think about is the movie “Christmas Vacation”. Chevy Chase decks his house with enough lights to see from space. But in all seriousness, these counterfeit electronic can be very dangerous. I agree that our country should do more to control what comes in and out of the country, but it seems to me that this should be more of an issue of individual accountability. Don’t buy counterfeit stuff! You aren’t contributing anything to society by doing this & it can hurt you.

I agree this is a huge ethical issue. I think that consumers should be really careful as to what they are buying if it leads to life and death situations. I also agree with the comment that people shouldnt buy conterfeit stuff. If you know its not the real thing then why would you buy it if its dealing with electronics. Buying a knock off purse is one thing, but buying conterfeit lights can result in fires and affect your life.
