Mother admits drowning infant, claims mental illness defense

Savannah, Georgia: mother sentenced to 19 months in jail (The time she was in jail waiting for trail) and 30 years probation for drowning her 3 month old child.  Virkisha Warren plead “guilty but mentally ill” to a reduce charge of voluntary manslaughter.

I may be mistaken but I thought the Criminal Justice system was created to put criminals in prison.  How can the judge continue practicing after this?  The woman killed an innocent 3 month old baby.  This child could not even crawl, much less defend itself.  I personally think this case was a good candidate for the death penalty.  Ok judge so if you are going to buy the mental illness story, put the woman in a mental institution for the rest of her life, not out on the street that very same day she is in your court room.  This judge should be removed from the bench.  This is just another example of what the Criminal justice system is today.

I dont agree with the death penalty I believe jail is much worse than just ending their life. However, it is horrible that someone can get off with claiming mental illness after killing a child. There had to have been some sanity involved in doing it or the thought wouldn’t have come to the womans mind to start with. Claiming mental illness is in my view just an easy way out of a penalty the convicted deserves.

I agree that this mother got off way too easily for killing an innocent child. If she claimed that she has a mental illness then she should be put away somewhere until she is properly treated, not sent back out to the streets with meaningless probation. I also agree that the insanity defense is used way too much in modern society. If you can’t prove that you are innocent with the facts of the case, then you are guilty and should serve jail time just like everyone else.

I do not understand how a mentally ill woman who just murdered a 3 month old baby. I understand our judicial system has its flaws and loop-holes, but this should not be happening. It is not morally right to keep her in jail because she is mentally ill, but she need to be put into a pyscho ward. She does not deserve to be able to be out in public causing potential danger to innocents citizens. Whats going to stop her from having another child and murdering it as well? What if she murders someone elses child? If that were to occur the judicial system would be considered quite the joke. It needs to take action immediately before something else happens.

I don’t think this woman had a “mental illness.” She knew what she was doing from the beginning. She just used that excused to get a lesser punishment. How can she just kill a baby like that and not feel bad. A baby for goodness sake! What did the baby do to make her kill it like that. If she does have mental problems then she needs to be a mental institution forever. I personally think that she deserves the death penalty. She got off so easily.

I do think the mother got off way to easily. I feel the defense uses this argument way too much and people are getting off easy and going to mental institutions to get help for illnesses that they sometimes dont even have. I think the death penalty is a little extreme but the mother does deserve to be in jail for what she did to the baby. The justice system makes for the mental illness defense to be used in so many cases when its just an excuse to reduce sentencing.

These types of cases disgust me. Even if there is psychological reasons why these criminals acts occur we still need to hold people responsible. I think the only way to prevent these terrible situations from occurring is to put in place higher medical tests to screen for such imbalances and illnesses.

Personally, I don’t believe in killing someone by lethal injection or electrocution but this woman should be behind bars for the rest of her life. She killed an innocent baby, who could not even talk or stand up for itself. Most people know exactly what they be doing in cases like this, then when they go to court they make like they are insane so the sentence will be reduced or sometimes even dropped. I always pose the question, “Why go through 9 months of hell to kill the one person you are suppose to love if not anybody else?” Think of all the other things you could have done for nine months if you were going to take an innocent child’s life like this.
