Sugar cereals are ‘Smart Choices’? FDA not so sure

According to the FDA, many companies are placing the “Smart Choices” label, a term supposedly meaning the food is a healthy choice, on pretty much anything, including frozen sweet cakes and sugary cereal. The FDA on Tuesday sent out a letter to companies saying that it would begin cracking down on the deceptive labeling. It is unethical for these companies to falsely advertise something as healthy when they know it is not. Many Americans, children and adults, are overweight or obese and need to eat healthier. Many of these same Americans don’t really know much about nutrition and rely heavily on the packaging. I applaud the FDA for trying to control this and hopefully lead America to a healthier future.

Deceptive labeling is everywhere and is a huge part of the marketing plans of products. However, product appeal is what consumers base many impulse decisions on. Therefore even though the description is misleading it does not create harm for others and I believe should be tolerated.

I agree that the intiative of the FDA is a step in the right direction. It is quite questionable if companies should be permitted to place a “Smart Choice” label on their sugary cereals. On the other hand I think that grown-up, (hopefully) thinking consumers should be able to realize that sugary food can’t be healthy and learn something about nutrition, respectively. But probably there are lots of people who precisely not know enough about nutrition and have to rely on the packaging. With respect to the modified ignorant-consumer standard the FDA should counter the misleading advertising techniques.

With these labels lying to people no wonder why no one can lose weight. People are trying everywhere to drop a few pounds and eating smart. But with smart choice on them it is hindering their success. The FDA need to step up there requirments and help out the citizens of America. With people just buying these things on impulse they are not knowing what is inside them.
