California health insurers discriminate against women, lawsuit contends
This is an article that discusses a situation in which the Department of Managed Health Care approves the idea and puts in place a system that allows insurance companies to charge women higher premiums by 39 percent simply because of their gender. According the the system, the insurance companies are taking into consideration “gender rating” when coming up with a price for the policy. The Department of Managed Health Care defends themselves in pointing out that “the rates are in line with state law.”
This may be true, the rates are not illegal but it does not make it right. As we learned in class, just because something is a law or in accordance with the law does not make it morally justifiable. This is case where woman are in a sense being punished for possibly needing more medical attention. These woman are being treated unfairly and taken advantage of over something they have no control over.
